Gamification app “EsploraMiró”
“Joan Miró. È quando sogno che vedo chiaro” is a temporary exhibition about Joan Miró, sponsored by Regione Autonoma Valle d’Aosta, exhibited at the MAR in Aosta from April 28 to October 1, 2023. The showcase proposes an ecological reinterpretation of his art production, shedding light on its ecological perspective and underscoring the continued relevance of the mironian great topics nowadays.
Besides curating and developing the exhibition, Visivalab has also crafted a tailored gamification app for the project, titled EsploraMiró. Through the gaming experience, the app actively engages visitors and allows them to interact with the fascinating world of the renowned artist, while accompanying them along a playful itinerary that runs side by side with the classic tour of the exhibition.

Project
EsploraMiró serves as a digital interactive guide for the exhibit dedicated to the life and legacy of Joan Miró. The app’s main goal is to arouse visitor’s interest and create a suggestive museum experience that transcends the traditional observation of the artworks.
Thus, gamification becomes a resource that enhances the artistic experience by promoting a pleasant and entertaining way of learning. With the implementation of this tool, the showcase caters to a diverse range of audiences, including younger generations, families, and group visitors. The ludic elements motivate users to reach achievements leading them to a sense of fulfillment, which results in a prolonged interaction with the exhibition.
The app is available to download for free through a QR code at the beginning of the visit. Before starting the virtual tour, users are required to register and customize their gaming experience. They can select from two difficulty levels and choose whether to play individually or in team mode.

GAME STRUCTURE
The app features eight minigames of different natures designed to engage visitors and challenge them to sharpen their senses and observational skills. The game themes and typologies are directly related to the iconography, technique, and composition of the selected artwork, establishing a connection between the game and the masterpiece.
The game dynamics are repeated across the eight rooms. Firstly, the user has to complete the minigame that enables interaction with Miró’s work. Afterward, he must answer a riddle which seeks to reinforce the knowledge acquired during the tour.
To navigate the exhibition, the app provides a floor plan of the museum that shows the location of the minigames and the user’s position within the different spaces. Once the room’s challenges are completed, the map’s area changes color and is conquered with a green flag. At the top of the screen, users can track how many stars and flags they have collected so far.
The interactive artworks stand out among the other pieces in the room due to the signage, which seamlessly blends with the overall graphic design of the exhibition. Thanks to hidden beacons, the minigames automatically trigger in users’ smartphones as they approach the paintings, ensuring an uninterrupted and fluid experience.
