SIMOVI, Flow and Access Management System
Following the spread of COVID-19, we experienced a difficult moment that entailed strong containment measures, such as restricting movement and closing public and cultural places. Now in the reopening phase, the Archaeological Park of Paestum and Velia intends to become a reference model for the safe visit of museums and archaeological sites.
With this in mind, we developed SIMOVI, an intelligent system for the effective and secure management of both the public capacity and Paestum’s internal staff. The system allows to control the flow of visitors in real-time and manage staff shifts, in addition to anonymously gathering big data and statistics about users that are useful for the museum. SIMOVI was implemented into the Paestum app we developed in 2019, thus facilitating the integration of the new system with the existing tech infrastructure.

Project
Now that we have entered a phase of gradual reopening of all activities, it is required a radical change in the approach and use of the monuments and pieces of art.
The management of the Park already organized the reserving and the online option for purchasing tickets. But it came to realization that the digital dimension is the starting point in rethinking the use of cultural spaces, without incurring infection and spreading risks.
Therefore, we decided to work taking advantage of already existing resources: the smartphone app we developed uses an open source programming language, dynamic and scalable, perfect to adapt to every necessity.
The update introduces new functions adapted to the safe management for the public and the internal staff from Paestum, and it informs and protects the users anonymously.

Thanks to the geolocation, the warning messages and the new functions adapted to the COVID-19 regulations, it is possible to manage the flow of visitors and staff safely and in real time. In so doing, the app helps the first ones to keep physical distance and the second ones to successfully monitor in real time the movements and possible agglomerations in the archaeological area.
Particularly, the app reminds the visitors the use of a mask and the hygiene rules, suggests with pop-ups the best routes to avoid an excessive number of people in the same area and warns about the capacity of the Park even before arriving to the area. The entry is equipped with a thermal scanner that measures the corporal temperature of the attendants.
The Control Room answers to the constant tracking function of visitors and staff. The back-end of the app allows to split the archaeological area by sectors through the creation of polygons whose points are based on precise geographical coordinates.
Therefore, the system signals the different sectors as it follows:
- green, if the participation is under the given parameters,
- yellow, if the capacity of the sector is over the average,
- red, if the quantity of people is excessive.
The sectors delimited by polygons are not fixed, and can be modified – even temporally- depending on the necessities, in the cases of construction, excavation or restoration.
The system also foresees the internal management of staff shifts, to track the contact historial between co-workers in case it is necessary (for example, if there is a positive testing for the virus).
Due to this and other adopted measures -like the signalling or the dispensers with hand sanitizer- we have accelerated and simplified the detection of potential infection situations. For this reason, the Paestum Archaeological Park was one of the first to reopen its doors on the 18th of May 2020.
